YOI: and Streetlab present Sustainable Style Statement on Tuesday night april 21, 2009. Aim is to inspire and inform you about innovative sustainable trends in design and fashion. During a talk show speaker Shammy Jacob, director Sustainable Ventures, will tell us about Nike Considered Design. Young creative’s like JULIEN ARTS make their own ‘Sustainable Style Statement’ in the exposition.

During Sustainable Style Statement we are not talking about the problems we are facing producing clothes and products, we are presenting solutions. Ever thought about banana fibers, soja beans or plastic bottles in your outfit? Is there a life after your worn shoes? Curious for the meaning of ‘cradle to cradle’?

SWAPSHOP is a temporary installation where you can exchange a pre-loved clothing item (and its story) for something new!
It is based on the idea that clothing is a relic, something treasured for its past associations.

Prinses Máxima brak met haar favoriete couturier Graciele Naum toen bleek dat zij zaken deed met Argentijnse ateliers waar werknemers onder slechte omstandigheden moesten werken. Pierre Hupperts schoot te hulp en maakte modehuis Naum duurzaam. De veelgevraagde adviseur maatschappelijk ondernemen zorgde dat de kleine naaiateliers microkredieten kregen. De toestand van de werknemers verbeterde en Máxima kon de mode-ontwerpster weer in haar armen sluiten. Hupperts adviseert ook de regering over de aanschaf van duurzame kantoormeubelen en dergelijke.

This Saturday, Streetlab will open its doors as a ’supermarket’ at their temporary projectspace. This is a pilot project for a new gallery, showroom and shop. Upcoming months Streetlab will sell some inspiring young designer labels featuring some Hiphonest labels selected by YOI:. The presented Hiphonest labels are : JUX , Intoxica and Supershirt!

Concept of this website

The idea behind this website is to start a conversation about the Hiphonest lifestyle.
‘Hip’ stands for something fashionable and trendsetting whereas ‘honest’ stands for respect for people and planet.
Hiphonest.com creates an online interactive notebook for you and me. By doing so we can all witness the enormous pace in which the hiphonest community is developing itself.
A lifestyle is not about a small group off people dictating how things should be! Therefore we like to ask you to share your thoughts. ‘Dare to share, because you care!’ (see more at page YOU)

Respect for people and planet is explained by the S-values. The S-values are based on the ‘ psst’ whisper-concept. Imagine a Hiphonest INTOXICA jeans could talk. Probably it would say: ’ Don’t I look stunning with this edgy finishing and innovative cut?’. And pssst….., I am made with organic cotton en sustainable washings as well!

How to use the word Hiphonest

Hiphonest is NOT a word that you can own or use as a brand. Hiphonest is (internationally) branded by the YOI foundation to protect it from misuse. So what IS HipHonest? Lets say it’s a word that you as a consumer can use to subscribe: a person; a product or an initiative, that you consider has a fashionable style and that is born from a respectful mind/soul/spirit/heart. Respectfull towards our planet and everything that dwells on it. Focus is on fashion labels and design products.

By using the word Hiphonest in this honest way, we together can create an Hiphonest international transparent and ‘opensource’ community. From this, all Hiphonest people and initiatives can profit!

Hiphonest the word

The word ‘Hiphonest’ is created by Annouk Post in 2003. Searching for fashionable, honestly produced labels in the shops of New York City, Amsterdam, London and Paris made her realize that this kind of fashion, this new lifestyle that she was looking for, needed a word. The words that came was: Hiphonest!
By interviewing young trendsetters on the streets of Brooklyn, she introduced this word and asked them for their opinion on this new lifestyle. The word was accepted immediately and a fashionable statement was born.
You can read more about this journey in her notebook (published here soon) This research was used for Annouk’s final project ‘YOI’ at the Artez Institute of the Arts, the bachelor masters Fashion Design and Strategy.
